Adjustment is not about how the pedal feels — it is a measurement. When you make a full brake application, the pushrod pushes out of the air chamber and rotates the slack adjuster, which twists the camshaft (or actuates the wedge) to press the shoes against the drum. The distance that pushrod travels is theapplied stroke.
